EPFL develops a flexible fiber-shaped motor for soft robots and wearables

· Source: New Atlas

EPFL researchers have created FiberMotor, a 1 to 3 mm wide motor made from two nested polymer fibers wrapped in copper wire that slide relative to each other through electrostatic force. One unit held about 75 g, and four bundled together moved a tendon-driven robotic finger. The team sees uses in soft robotics, prosthetics and haptics, through the spinoff Elecsyor.
